No matter the season, watermelon is a hydrating treat. After all, the fruit is 92% water. It also has plenty of vital nutrients, including vitamin C and potassium.
Next time you’re munching on watermelon, you may want to share it with others, including your pet. Cats can consume the fruit, but what about dogs?
Certain fruits, like grapes, are toxic for your pup. Others, including apples and strawberries, can be sweet alternatives when given in moderation. So, is watermelon one of these treats?
Can dogs eat watermelon?
Good news: Your dog can eat watermelon. However, this does come with precautions. The watermelon should be seedless, the American Kennel Club advises. Seeds are a choking hazard and could lead to gastrointestinal issues, PetMD reports.
It is also important to remove the rind since consuming it may cause an upset stomach, the American Kennel Club adds.

Why is watermelon good for dogs?
Watermelon is a low-calorie fruit full of vitamins A, B6 and C, and potassium, according to the Mayo Clinic. It has no fat, sodium or cholesterol, making watermelon a healthy treat alternative for your pet, the Clinic reports.
Like other fruits, watermelon does contain sugar. Do not overfeed watermelon to your dog since it can contribute to health issues, Purina reports.
How much watermelon can I give my dog?
Treats, including watermelon, should make up 10% of your pet's diet, with the remaining 90% comprised of their regular vet-approved food, according to PetMD.
You can always give your dog chunks of watermelon, but there are other ways to serve it. The American Kennel Club suggests pureeing the fruit and freezing it into ice cubes. You can give these to your dog to cool them off after playtime or on a hot day.
Portions will vary depending on your dog's size, according to PetMD. For example, an "extra-small dog," such as a Yorkie or Chihuahua, can eat one to two slices of watermelon. A "large dog," like a Labrador or German Sheppard, can have several slices.
Does watermelon give dogs diarrhea?
Like any treat, watermelon should be given to your dog in moderation.
Too much watermelon can cause diarrhea or vomiting, PetMD reports. It can even contribute to obesity and diabetes in the long term if eaten too often and at high volumes, according to Purina.
